Not just NEET, but at least 64 other major examinations across 19 Indian states have been marred by incidents of question paper leaks since 2019, according to data analysed by India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team
The data has been sourced from public records and media reports and includes paper leaks that culminated in either registration of a First Information Report (FIR), arrests of accused persons, or cancellation of the exam.Apart from the leak of the question paper for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-UG 2024, four other pan-India level examinations were engulfed by paper leaks. They are: the Indian Army’s Common Entrance Examination for recruiting soldiers in 2021, the Central Teachers’ Eligibility Test (CTET) 2023, NEET-UG 2021, and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains 2021.
Among states, a maximum of eight instances were reported from Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan and Maharashtra shared second rank with seven paper leak cases, followed by Bihar (6), and four in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh each. Haryana, Karnataka, Odisha, and West Bengal witnessed three cases each of paper leaks between January 1, 2019, and June 25, 2024.
Delhi, Manipur, and Telangana individually saw two cases of paper leak while Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, and Nagaland had to deal with one case of paper leak.Out of the total number, 45 exams included in this analysis were held for recruiting candidates for various roles in government departments, and at least 27 of them were either cancelled or postponed. At least 17 of the non-recruitment exams relate to state boards and universities.Paper leaks resulted in cancellations of examinations to fill more than three lakh government posts during this period, the analysis shows.The impact spans a wide range of exams, including the Teacher Eligibility Test in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, police recruitment exams in Assam, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Jammu & Kashmir, a forest recruitment examination in Uttarakhand, and junior engineer recruitment exams in Telangana, Gujarat, and Rajasthan
